Who Speaks for the Trees?

Global warming, slow violence, negative externalities, social injustices, appropriation, extreme wealth disparities, point and non-point pollution, cultural genocide, withheld human rights, deceit, deforestation, habitat loss, lack of support, under representation, resource depletion, forced assimilation, unchecked privilege, the list of complex problems that exist today goes on and on.

Why would anyone choose to work to understand and tirelessly put energy into these issues when these seemingly “un-solvable” problems paint the future bleak beyond recognition? Day in and day out reminding themselves of all the depressing injustices that humans have created?

I can only speak to what keeps me motivated. I’m sure that some of you will relate.

For me, I am motivated to leave this earth in a better state than which it was when I was born into it. I want future generations to marvel at all of the diverse cultures and species that I have been lucky to see and experience. Also, I have a great love for everyone and everything because in a way they have all, in a way, loved me. They have challenged me, taught me, criticized me, made fun of me, shared emotions with me, hindered me, and supported me. They have given me positive qualities to my character the I wouldn’t have otherwise and in this was have “loved me” and I in turn want to love them back. I know that all people are generally good even the ones who seemingly are not are usually misguided or have been mistreated. It has taken me a very long time to realize this and I still find myself condemning others from time to time.

“Instead of condemning people, let’s try to understand them. Let’s try to figure out why they do what they do. That’s a lot more profitable and intriguing than criticism; and it breeds sympathy, tolerance and kindness. ‘To know all is to forgive all’” – Dale Carnegie

So to that end, I find that even though the issues with which we focus on in the Environmental Studies major are tough and trying, I find the strength and motivation to carry on from my resolve to improve our world for the future. No matter how small the change, at least it’s in the right direction. I celebrate these small victories and become empowered to do more. I do my best to practice self care to maintain mental balance and release stress. I consciously push myself physically to keep my energy levels up and be in good health. I give back to my community because it feels good. Adding value through service to others feels great and you also benefit those who you serve.

I am happy to say that I finally decided on an organization and project that I would love to give my time to. Humboldt County Office of Education operates the Redwood Edventures Quests. Once you arrive at a designated Edventure Quest Trail you can grab a brochure and be guided along the trail by way of a rhyming story. Part scavenger hunt, part riddle solving, as you travel along the trail the story directs your attention to points of interest and educates you about them. The best part: if you are successful at getting all the clues you can redeem the last missing clue for a unique Quest Patch! You can find more information about Redwood Edventures here: http://www.redwood-edventures.org/

What I hope to contribute is the creation of a whole new quest! The location is yet to be determined but I’m excited to have the opportunity to inspire and educate minds, young and old, through this fun and interactive channel of discovery!
